The IZES gGmbH was founded in November 1999 as an associated institute to the University of Applied Sciences Saarbruecken by the initiative of the Federal State Saarland, several utilities, the University of Saarland and the University of Applied Sciences Saarbruecken and was initially operated under the liability of a registered association (ZES e.V.). Since 2005 and after merging with the Energy Agency of the Saarland (later AZES GmbH), IZES is operating as a non-profit organisation/limited.
Currently, the interdisciplinary team consists of professors and scientific employees with diverse educational backgrounds, as for instance: environmental, mechanical, civil and agricultural engineering, economics, environmental law and policy, forestry, energy technology, social science, chemistry and computer science. The team is supplemented by several graduands, completing their diploma-, master- or bachelor thesis at IZES, and by other students doing an internship or are applied as research assistants.
Under the business-related management of Dr Michael Brand and Dr Frithjof Spreer the IZES gGmbH is supporting environmental and climate protection by carrying-out applied research and development in the area of future technologies and future markets for energy and material flow systems. The IZES gGmbH is advising, accompanying and carrying-out activities to initiate, devise and realise innovative measures for a rational energy use and for the application of renewable energies. Here, energy technology, energy market and material flow related topics are analysed integratedly and systemically. Since April 2011 Prof Dr Uwe Leprich is scientific director of the institute.
The IZES gGmbH is running national and international projects on behalf and in cooperation with municipalities, authorities, ministries, institutions, national and European funding institutions, companies of the private industry and other science institutions. Beside the initiation and scientific implementation and carrying-out of joint / cooperative projects in Germany and the European neighbouring countries the IZES gGmbH is also realising bigger research projects on international level.
